The greater yellowlegs is a large shorebird in the family Scolopacidae. It breeds in central Canada and southern Alaska and winters in southern North America, Central America, the West Indies and South America.

Alaskan wood carver, Ron Gravenhorst carves a few species of Alaskan birds in life size; and most species of ducks, geese, swans, and loons in miniature.

He uses basswood and after cutting out the profile on a band saw uses only knives and gouges to carve.

A wood burning tool is used for the feathering and he paints the birds using brushes and acrylic paints.

Ron lives in Cooper Landing, Alaska.
