The origin of the name saffron is from the Arabic word "asper" which means yellow.
The saffron threads are actually scars from the saffron flowers that are picked in a tedious manual process and hence its expensive price.

The saffron has a refined taste, colors the food in a golden color, and goes well with beef stews, Indian rice and risotto, and French fish soups.
